MATTHEW KNOWLES OBSESSED WITH BRINGING DOWN LETOYA
July 31, 2006

Since the breakup of Destiny's Child nearly six years ago, Beyonce Knowles and LeToya Luckett seem to have gotten over any lingering harsh feelings. But according to an industry insider, Beyonce's father/manager, Matthew Knowles, hasn't been able to get over the bitter feelings he has for LeToya.

MediaTakeOut.com spoke exclusively with a record industry insider who says that Matthew Knowles can't stand to see LeToya's new found success. According to the insider, "when Matthew saw that Torn was moving up the charts on 106 & Park, he really flipped out." The next day, the insider tells us, Matthew announced that he was postponing Kelly Rowland's album release (which was scheduled to be released around the same time as LeToya's) and pushed Beyonce into the studio.

But Matthew Knowles' obsession with LeToya is reportedly putting stress on his relationship with Beyonce. The insider tells MediaTakeOut.com that Knowles tried to pressure Beyonce into making a song that bad-mouthed LeToya - but Beyonce refused. The insider told us, "Beyonce was so sick of what her father was doing that she went off and recorded the entire album behind his back," and added, "Beyonce's so upset that I wouldn't be surprised if she took on new management."

But even Beyonce's disapproval hasn't stopped her father from trying to block LeToya's success. In what Knowles calls a "logical and sensible" business move, he began pre-selling Beyonce's album the same day LeToya released her self-titled album. A move that undoubtedly undercut LeToya's sales

Despite all of Matthew Knowles' efforts, however, LeToya's album sales haven't slowed down one bit. MediaTakeOut.com received an exclusive sneak peak at early SoundScan numbers which show that LeToya's album should sell close to 200,000 units in its first week.

MAYBE IT'S NOT DEJU VU AFTERALL?
July 31, 2006

An item appearing in the press on Friday, July 28 falsely speculated that the upcoming release and pre-sale date for Beyonce's new album, "B'Day," were set in response to an upcoming album release by LeToya Luckett, a former member of Destiny's Child. In order to put a stop to these unfounded rumors, Beyonce and her manager, Mathew Knowles, have each issued statements clarifying the facts of the situation.

"I have enormous respect and admiration for LeToya as an artist and a business woman and I wish her incredible success with her debut CD and her career," said Beyonce. "LeToya and I have known each other since childhood and, because of all we've been through, I know that we both really care - and want what's best - for each other. We are pleased that LeToya has chosen to include our House of Dereon designs in her Lady Elle boutique in Houston and look forward to continuing to work with her in the future. It makes me sad that that people are trying to stir up a controversy where there is none. LeToya makes fantastic music and it would be great if her fans, as well as the press, could simply enjoy it on its own merits and not engage in negative speculation."

"I'm shocked and amazed that this is even an issue," said Mathew Knowles. "It's standard practice in the music industry for upcoming albums to go on pre-sale well in advance of an in-store date. From the time Beyonce began working on her new album, 'B'Day,' we wanted to release it in early September to coincide with her 25th birthday on September 4. Our pre-sale strategy is a logical and sensible lead-in to that target date and has nothing to do with the scheduled releases of any other albums by any other artists."

IS IT DEJU VU?
July 29, 2006

Six years after being fired from Destiny's Child, R&B singer LeToya Luckett is apparently still paying.

On Tuesday, her debut solo album, "LeToya," showed up in record stores, featuring the single "Torn," which reached No. 2 on the Billboard charts. But industry insiders are buzzing that her former bandmate Beyoncé Knowles is rushing out her next album, "B-Day," to sabotage Luckett's success.

Beyoncé and her father-manager, Matthew Knowles, who also managed Destiny's Child, have made "B-Day" available for preorders before the Sept. 4 release. Insiders claim it's an attempt to distract fans from LeToya and undercut her sales.

In 2001, LeToya and ex-Destiny's Child member LaTavia Roberson settled breach-of-contract and fraud suits against Beyoncé's dad and the girl group. "There was supposed to be this whole peace treaty between the girls," an insider told Lowdown. "Lady Elle carries Beyoncé's clothing line and is very successful. The fact is, this is supposed to be over and in the past."

A call to Beyoncé's rep was not returned. LeToya's record label, Capitol, declined to comment.

LETOYA'S 'TORN' NO MORE
July 28, 2006

LeToya's 'Torn' No More: Singer Unleashes Second Single, Tours With Mary J.

She helped make Destiny's Child a household name by co-writing hits like "Say My Name" and "Bills, Bills, Bills," and now LeToya Luckett wants everyone to know her name, too: The singer released her self-titled solo R&B album on July 25. LeToya includes "Torn," which peaked at #2 on Billboard's Hot R&B/ Hip-Hop Songs chart and maintained a presence on the Hot 100, as well as her next single, "She Don't."

"It's kind of a follow-up to 'Torn' since we have decided to leave him alone," LeToya said, referring to the love-him-or-leave-him story line of the first single. "He's got with somebody else but he's unhappy because he realizes the new girl will never be me. She won't love him, and I was loyal. You got to deal with it."

The album also features producers Jermaine Dupri, Scott Storch, Jazze Pha and Teddy Bishop, and writers Johnta Austin (Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together") and Dave Young (Mary J. Blige's "Alone"). "If you all didn't know, I'm from Houston, so I have to represent," she added, running down a list of collaborations with fellow Texans. "I've got Mike Jones, Paul Wall, Slim Thug, the whole crew" (see "Ex-Destiny's Child Member Turns To God, Houston For New LP"). LeToya's previously released singles also appear on the album, including "U Got What I Need" and "What Love Can Do," which was featured on the "Coach Carter" soundtrack.

Right now, LeToya is in the midst of opening 26 dates on Mary J. Blige's the Breakthrough Experience Tour. "I am so excited because she is one of my favorite artists," LeToya gushed. "I am just blessed, having fun, and it's unbelievable." The tour ends September 8 in Concord, California.

So what's next? Like Brooke Valentine and Bobby Valentino, LeToya hopes to break into the film industry. "I would love to do some acting," she said. "I was big on movies when I was little. I always wanted to be certain actresses and do my thing like that. If someone offered me a movie, I will take your script."

ONE DAY SALES: GO LETOYA!
July 28, 2006

Capitol Diva Has the Early Lead, but Both Artists Have a Shot at Unseating the Hits Collection

If you were wondering if any individual act would ever sell in six figures again, join the club. So it’s reassuring to see an artist finally appear with the clout to knock Now 22 off its perch (although it’s too early to tell for sure).

That would be LeToya, from rapidly heating up Capitol, whose first solo album is rolling toward 175k-185k. This projection gives the former Destiny’s Child member a slight edge for next week’s top chart position over Star Trak/Interscope’s Pharrell, but he’s trending just a whisker behind her at 165k-175k. Adding additional complexity to the situation is the fact that Pharrell has a much bigger presence on iTunes, with both the clean and explicit versions of his album in the store’s Top 10. Combine all that with the durable Now wow factor, and this one’s just too close to call.

Please continue to support the album and spread the word it is in stores NOW!

People Magazine: 3 stars
"Songs like the soulful hit ballad 'Torn' and the bouncy hip-hop track "Gangsta Grillz" will have R&B fans saying her name."

LA Daily News : 3 out of 4 stars
"There's been some things on my mind, and it's time that I let them go," declares LeToya in the breathy introduction to her self-titled debut. She's talking about love. So don't expect the Grammy-winning r&b singer and "Say My Name" co-songwriter to get snarky about how her former Destiny's Child mates cast her aside. She's forging her own destiny starting with the oh-so-soulful "Torn," her chart-topping hit about a strained relationship that features a sample of the Stylistics' "You Are Everything." Other highlights include the silky "She Don't," the crunktastic "Tear Da Club Up," featuring Jazze Pha and Bun B, and the bass-heavy "I'm Good." Add her gorgeous voice and LeToya should have no trouble convincing fans to say her name, again."

LETOYA REVEALS DESTINY WITH NY DAILY NEWS
July 18, 2006

For LeToya, a hit song as a solo
artist may be the best revenge...

No one would blame the one-named R&B singer LeToya for feeling bitter or cynical about the music business. Six years ago, as a member of Destiny's Child, she suffered one of the worst indignities in pop history. After mounting tensions between her and the group's manager, Mathew Knowles (who's also, by the way, Beyoncé's father), LeToya switched on her TV one day to see that she and another contentious member of the group had mysteriously vanished from the new "Say My Name" video, replaced by two other girls. This, on a track that not only featured LeToya's vocals but that she co-wrote.

Yet the singer claims she never felt anger, bitterness or a need for vengeance. "It was more just hurt," she insists. "I knew I would never get to see them again. I couldn't call Beyoncé just to talk. The only way of seeing them was in magazines and on TV, showing how successful they were. But I never felt like I didn't want them to be successful."

Not even a little?

"No," LeToya answers.

LIFE LESSONS - LATAVIA SPEAKS!!!
July 17, 2006

Our other favorite girl, LaTavia Roberson recently spoke with Jawn Murray about what she has been up to and more!

Life after Destiny's Child: "My transition took a long time. My mindset after everything happened was just, 'Wow, I can't believe this happened.' I was really like in a daze. I knew what was going on, but I had no idea, and I didn't know what was going to happen with my life and what direction I was going in. I wished that I wasn't unemployed, but I felt it was something that I had to do for myself to better myself at the time. Dealing with all of the lawsuits and all of those proceedings, it took almost two years for us to get through all of this. That was really a headache, and I was glad when that part was over. That's when I finally started living a little and getting out to see what the real world had to offer."

On Letoya Luckett's solo comeback: "I'm glad that she came out the way that she did. I'm glad she sounds the way that she does, because there were a lot of things out there about us not being able to sing. She sounds good and looks good. I really couldn't be happier for her. It's not about proving anyone wrong, because it's not about that. But I'm so happy for her, and I hope God continues to bless her journey. We talk every couple of weeks."

EX-DC MEMBER LETOYA TAKES SOLO SPOTLIGHT
July 14, 2006

Most artists are lucky to get one shot at stardom. But six years after being forced out of Destiny's Child just as the R&B stars were about to break big, LeToya Luckett is poised for success once more. And the now single-monikered singer/songwriter is not taking the second chance for granted.

Answering questions while prepping for a photo shoot at Los Angeles' Le Mondrian hotel, LeToya reflected on the ups and downs she has encountered since leaving Houston's best-known export. "I only have one shot at doing this," she declares. "My first look had to be right." Which is partly why delivery of her self-titled Capitol debut, originally scheduled for release last year, was postponed until July 25. It looks like the delay is paying off. "Torn" is No. 3 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, No. 36 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 12 on Hot 100 Airplay.

Other than mentioning LeToya's seven-year stint in Destiny's Child (including co-writing the career-building singles "Bills Bills Bills" and "Say My Name"), Capitol is treating her as a new artist. "Our initial objective was to introduce a hit song and video to establish her as the H-town girl that she is and let her tell that story," says Fabian "Fade" Duvernay, vice president of urban marketing for Capitol. "We really want to go into making LeToya the urban 'It' girl." "LeToya" stretches from soulful, sensuous ballads and club jams to spotlighting the city's trademark "screwed-up" style. "I'm a Southern belle who likes heavy-hitting beats," says LeToya, who co-wrote nine of the album's 16 songs. "I can give it to you hard or I can be soft and soulful, hip-hop with grace."

TOUGH TRANSITION

That versatility wasn't fully realized during her Destiny's Child tenure. She and former fellow group member LaTavia Roberson gained more notoriety for their unceremonious ouster from the group in March 2000. Ensuing breach-of-contract and defamation-of-character lawsuits were settled out of court in 2002. A subsequent pairing with Roberson in a new girl group called Angel was aborted. Moving to Los Angeles for six months, LeToya traveled the modeling and acting agency circuit while cutting demos that eventually secured the Capitol contract.

"Being the ex-Destiny's Child member was the most awkward part," LeToya says of that period. "Some people didn't want to touch my music ... But at the same time, (Destiny's Child) got me in the door." In the interim, LeToya established Houston boutique Lady Elle with her mother. The 3-year-old clothing and accessory store sells a variety of fashion lines, including Tag and Beyonce and Tina Knowles' House of Dereon.

When the enhanced "LeToya" CD is released July 25, it will include segments from a limited-run reality show on BET, which tracks the singer's prerelease process. The show starts airing on the cable outlet July 17. On July 14, LeToya kicked off her stint as opening act (along with rapper Jaheim) on Mary J. Blige's North American summer tour. A forward-looking LeToya welcomes the chance to stretch. "It's funny. In the beginning I never saw myself as a solo artist. But the turning point came when people started showing me love on my promo tour. Now I want people to get to know me and my voice."

LETOYA LUCKETT: SINGLE DOES IT BETTER
July 14, 2006

After the storm comes the calm, and Letoya Luckett can certainly testify to that. Following a well publicized dispute including herself, ex-group mate Latavia, and Destiny’s Child manager, Matthew Knowles (for those of you who have been living under a rock, Matthew Knowles as in Beyonce’s father) that got both Letoya and Latavia booted off the multi-platinum selling group, Letoya is back on the block with an unpremeditated vengeance.

With her self-titled, solo debut project via Capitol Records out this month (July 25th, to be exact), and her first single, “Torn,” a heartfelt love/break-up song, on heavy rotation in every city ‘cross the country – plus paying her own “Bills, bills, bills” as she runs her own boutique, Lady Elle and having her fans – and haters alike – say her name during performances at major events like the BET Awards - this Houston-bred music child is taking destiny into her own hands and is doing a lot more than just surviving with it.

RUMOR CONTROL: TOMMY HILFIGER / AOL SESSIONS?
July 14, 2006

We received numerous e-mails yesterday saying they heard on their local stations that LeToya had signed a deal with Tommy Hilfiger as new a model and spokeswoman, can confirm this story is FALSE. Although we were told, LeToya and Tommy Hilfiger do have a good relationship and a deal has been mentioned, nothing has been finalized - yet.

"It's very possible" is what we were told after asking if LeToya would have own her AOL Music Session. With "She Don't" making its AOL Music premiere today and being the featured New Artist, an AOL Session seems like the next logical step, but we will soon find out!

BILLBOARD REVIEW / BROKEN ANKLE?
July 9, 2006

ARTIST: LeToya
SINGLE: Torn (Capitol Records)

Former Destiny's Child member LeToya Luckett proves her solo potential with heart-wrenching first single, "Torn." The topic is familiar -- whether to stay in a trying relationship. Amid the singer's laments ("A part of me wants to leave you alone/A part of me wants for you to come home") are weeping strings and keys that sample Mary J. Blige's similarly expressive single "You Are Everything.

Also, according to Rochester, New York's Democrat and Chronicle, LeToya broke her ankle while filming a video and wasn't able to perform at New York's Rochester Music fest.

July 10, 2006   The article from the Democrat and Chronicle is NOT TRUE!  LeToya did perform at the Fest and did NOT break her ankle.  She is still performing and doing just fine!

LETOYA LUCKETT: DESTINY'S ORPHAN
June 9, 2006

Don’t act like you forgot; 1998 wasn’t that long ago. Before “Survivor” was saturating radios and Jay-Z had the “hottest chick in the game wearing his chain,” Destiny’s Child was four young, beautiful girls by the names of Beyonce, Kelly, LeToya and LaTavia. Singles like “No, No, No Pt. 2” and “Bills, Bills, Bills” were topping the charts with their alluring beats and catchy hooks, while adepty-harmonized vocals from the quartet pushed earned them multi-platinum record sales and a stronghold as one of the premier female groups of the era. But behind the scenes, the group wasn’t so melodious—LeToya and LaTavia had disagreements with manager Matthew Knowles, and the two were eventually ousted from the group.

But nowadays, LeToya Luckett isn’t sweating it. Her new single, “Torn” is hotter than the summers in her hometown of Houston, and she’s maintaining her multi-tasking hustle with her own boutique and an impending real estate license. “Everybody’s grown up and doing their own thing,” LeToya says.

KISS LISTENERS GET A THANK YOU - A JAM
June 4, 2006

Surprisingly, it wasn't too hard to get former Destiny's Child member LeToya Luckett, now known simply as LeToya, to agree to come to Wilmington.

Even though her debut solo album won't be released by Capitol Records until the summer, LeToya will perform at the KISS FM Spring Jam IV at the Grand Opera House on Thursday (June 8th). As her single "Torn" begins its climb up the charts nationally, it's already a well-known song to listeners of KISS 101.7, the independently-owned Wilmington hip-hop/R&B station.

Back in February, Tony Quartarone, the owner and general manager of KISS, heard the song and immediately put it on the air. "We were the first ones to play LeToya in the tri-state area," says Quartarone, 39, of Brandywine Hundred. "Within a week it was the number one requested record." About two months later, Clear Channel's Power 99 in Philadelphia, one of Quartarone's biggest competitors, started playing it. It's that early support that allowed him to snag LeToya for the Spring Jam, even before the release of her album or the launch of her supporting tour.

LeToya, along with Spring Jam performers Mobb Deep, Ghostface Killah and Bubba Sparxxx, will make this the biggest Spring Jam in its four-year history. Its size is not lost on KISS listeners. A month before last year's Spring Jam, KISS had sold 25 tickets. At the same time this year, about 700 of the 1,200 tickets were already sold.

"LeToya is the number one requested record on our station for about five weeks. My guess is she'll be the headliner. They're going nuts for her," he says. "Out of respect, it should be Mobb Deep because they've been around the longest, but it's up to my audience."

THE ULTIMATE HUSTLA COLLABO
June 3, 2006

Most LeToya fans know Ms. Luckett declared herself "a hustla" in Ozone magazine, but now she's got Rick "everyday I'm hustin" Ross on the remix of "Torn."

"Ross can also be heard on the remix of Young Jock's "It's Goin' Down," on "Some Real S***," the first single from Daz's new album, and the remix of LeToya Luckett's R&B hit "Torn." He'll also be featured on an as-yet-untitled, Timbaland-produced cut from Snoop Dogg's new album, and on new albums by Too Short and Lil Wayne and Baby. Ross is in negotiations with P. Diddy to become the newest member of the Bad Boy Records rap-group Boyz N Da Hood, and his Miami clique, the Carol City Cartel, is planning a debut album. Ross also has loose plans to collaborate with some of his favorite MCs -- either on one of his albums or one of theirs."

LETOYA FEATURED IN JULY BLACK BEAT
May 30, 2006

LeToya is featured in "Pause" in BLACK BEAT's July 2006 issue. On stands now!

"Now with a self-titled album slated to hit the streets in July, the powerful singer who co-wrote the gold-certified smash hits, 'Bills, Bills, Bills' and 'Say My Name' for DC, wants fans worldwide to say her name over and over again." - BLACK BEAT Magazine

Q & A WITH LETOYA LUCKETT
May 30, 2006

Though it’s been over six years since LeToya Luckett left Destiny’s Child, she still finds herself fielding questions about purported beef with her former group mates. Never mind the fact that she, along with fellow ousted member Latavia Roberson, formed another group called Anjel after the original DC split up. Never mind the fact that LeToya managed to transform herself into a successful business woman with her Houston, TX-based high-end boutique, Lady Elle. Now, with her self-titled solo album set for release sometime this summer, LeToya’s finally ready to put the past behind her. With her new single, “Torn,” burning up the charts, it seems the cheerful Southern belle is poised to finally shed her D.C. identity and step into the spotlight—alone.

What can fans expect to hear on your new album, LeToya? The thing that I love about my album is that it’s real life experiences. Love, life, fun in the club [and] stuff like that. It’s everything that I’ve been through in the last five years, just growing into a woman and my experiences with love. It’s a real deep album and it’s a first for me, so the people that didn’t get to hear my voice in Destiny’s Child can now hear me on my solo album.

Are you concerned that people are always going to compare you to the success of your former Destiny’s Child group mates? You know what? People are going to talk. Destiny’s Child was a part of me; I was blessed to even have that experience, but this is me doing my thing and that’s all I can do.

How did you develop your sound as a solo artist after being a member of two groups? I had a little bit of a break. I actually started going to Jan Smith, [a vocal coach] out of Atlanta. She was referred to me by Usher. I'd sit down with her and we worked on conditioning and basically building my vocal skills. Through that and through going in the studio all the time, I established my sound. We were just working and working and working and trying out different things. That's just what I had to do.

Now that you’re back in the music game, do you plan to continue with your Houston-based boutique, Lady Elle? Of course! We're going into our third year. I’m so excited about that. I just started my online store. For those that don’t know, you can log on to www.ladyelleboutique.com and shop online.

Do you think you needed to take a break from the music industry? Yeah. I grew so much in that time. I needed that. I needed to be able to establish my own sound...to grow and go through things so that I'd have something to write about. I thank God for that time; He does everything on time.

How did you know when it was time to go back into the studio? You gotta ask the Lord about that one because it wasn't something that I set out to do. I never set out to do a solo album. A couple of months after [leaving] Destiny's Child, Latavia and I started a group called Anjel. Unfortunately, the production company folded so that's when I decided to figure out what I wanted to do. I flew out to L.A. and went to a couple of modeling agencies. I even had an acting coach. Then I came up with a little demo that had some of the songs that I was doing lead on with Anjel and made kind of like a mix tape. I went to anyone that would open up their door to me and just tried to shop a deal [until I] ran into a production company out of Atlanta called Noontime and got in the studio with them. Then, I just started grinding. We were in a little hole in a wall, sweating with no AC (air conditioning), but that's where we came up with some of our best records. We sent those over to Capitol [Records] and that's how I got here.

What attracted you to Capitol Records? They didn't have any female artists at the time and I knew that, basically, I wanted to be somewhere where the focus could be on me. Who wouldn't want that? You don't want to be with a label that has so much going on that you're on the back burner because they've got this artist coming out and that artist coming out. They didn't have that over at Capitol at the time. So I thought it just seemed like the best place.

You’re new single, “Torn,” is doing very well. Are you excited about the reception? That’s one of my favorite songs. It was produced by Teddy Bishop. I’m just so excited that people are getting it.

Who else did you team up with on the album? For starters, we had Jazze Pha out of an Atlanta; he's a long time friend of mine. I had Just Blaze, who did 'You Got What I Need.’ Scott Storch and Jermaine Dupri also did some tracks, and then of course I have my H-Town dudes [like] Mike Jones, Paul Wall and Slim Thug. I just had to put them on there because I've been listening to Screwed music and H-Town music since I was coming up, so I had to make that a part of my album. Since I’m from Houston, if I saw someone, I’d say, ‘Hey, we need to do something together.’ That’s how a lot of those collabs came together. I got some big timers on there.

Do you ever get tired of public scrutiny? People are going to do that because they want to know everything about you. I just try and keep it as private as I possibly can.

Do you have any plans to hit the road? I am on the road right now doing my promotional tour. I plan on going out on another tour once my album is released. Right now, I'm just doing my radio shows and going around and meeting new people.

Do you still keep in touch with any of the Destiny’s Child members? Well, I do carry House of Dereon [Beyonce’s clothing line] in my store, so I do have a business relationship with Beyonce. We’re cool when we see other. I’m still close with Latavia as well. We are all grown. We’ve had our own successes. I'm just happy for the experiences.

So that means that people can now stop speculating about cat fights, right? [Laughs] Right! No cat fights over here.

LETOYA READY TO FACE THE WORLD SOLO
May 16, 2006

TORONTO, Ont. - After group efforts in Destiny's Child and the short-lived Anjel, LeToya Luckett is ready to release a solo album.

"I never thought I would be a solo artist, I'll tell you that right now," says LeToya, in Toronto promoting the album, "LeToya," scheduled for release July 18.

Luckett, 25, was an original member of Destiny's Child, forming the group with Kelly Rowland, Beyonce Knowles and Latavia Roberson in 1993. Luckett and Roberson were then replaced with Michelle Williams and Farrah Franklin in 2000, after the two women tried to break their management contract with Matthew Knowles.

Luckett and Roberson then formed the group Anjel, but the production company who handled the group fell through and the group's demo was never released. After all that, Luckett finds herself on the cusp of the release of her first solo album. But it wasn't an easy transition for her. "I was so spoiled by the group atmosphere, you know, the having your sisters around at all times. And I knew my role in Destiny's Child, which was soprano," she says, adding she loved being a member of Destiny's Child. Luckett says she knew she had the ability to be a solo artist, but that she enjoyed being in a group for the atmosphere. Even now she finds it hard to perform solo instead of in a group.

"I love performing in a group because you can look to your left and to your right and have your girl there. You can definitely get the crowd involved from all ends of the stage. You know a girl will have the left side, you'll have the right side and someone else will have the middle and there's always somebody to look at. With being a solo artist, you're just all by yourself. All the focus is on you, and you're like 'oh my god, turn the spotlight off,'" she laughs. Luckett says the album took awhile to come together because she wanted to make sure everything on it was, by her standards, perfect. "I knew it was something I was going to have to put everything into – totally focus on – because I didn't just want to throw any kind of album out there. I wanted to have the right songs, I wanted them to have some substance, I wanted them to really be talking about something and have topics that people can relate to. I just wanted everything to be right," she says.

While in Destiny's Child, Luckett co-wrote some of the group's hits including "Bills Bills Bills" and "Say My Name." She has continued her songwriting, by co-writing nine of the 16 tracks on "LeToya." "It's a way to express myself and just pour my heart out on paper, shall I say," she says, adding one of her favourite songs on the album is the hit "Torn." "Torn" is currently number 11 on the Billboard R&B/Hip Hop chart. Luckett says she is humbled to see a song that is just hers climb the charts.

"It's crazy. It's exciting but it's unreal. I never knew that this was what God had planned for me. Every time I see progression of the song climbing or the video climbing or people hitting me on the MySpace page (saying) 'I love that song,' it's crazy to me, because I never saw this coming. It's wonderful," she says.

Another dream of Luckett's is coming true. She'll be opening for Mary J. Blige on tour this summer. Even now, Luckett says she can't believe that it is really happening. "I am such a big fan of hers. I've been listening to her since 'Real Love.' I used to bang on my school desk trying to do what she did in the video and dance like her and stuff like that. I've been listening to her ever since and been a huge fan of hers. To be able to be on tour with someone that I have looked up to for so long, that's just crazy," she says.

Besides her solo project, Luckett's other big project is her clothing store, Lady Elle, which is located in Houston, Texas. She says she is not sure if she would like to expand to other cities because of the heavy involvement she and her mother have in the store. "We handwrite the tags for God's sake. My mom runs the store. When I'm there, I work in the store. Our customers come in and we build a relationship with them so it would be different to expand because it wouldn't be mom and pop anymore," she says.

Luckett also says she is unsure whether or not she would want to create her own clothing line. She says right now she is busy concentrating on her solo work and she knows a clothing line would be a lot of work. And she has complimentary words towards "American Idol." Although she couldn't ring in on the controversy of Chris Daughtry being voted off last week's show because she doesn't have time to sit down and watch each episode, she says she is glad it got made.

"I admire them for making that show (and) going around to these different cities and finding talent," she says. "For people who never thought they would be able to have a chance, (they get to) line up and get a chance to audition and showcase their talent."

- Sarah Millar

LETOYA DISCOVERING HER DESTINY
May 16, 2006

LeToya, formerly of Destiny's Child, on going solo: "Sometimes I'm looking to my left or to my right and I'm saying, 'Whoa, I see the dancers, but I'm looking for someone else with a mike here.' "

Former Destiny's Child vocalist LeToya is touring with Mary J. Blige this summer and a Toronto date is a virtual certainty.

"Yes, I'm going on tour with Mary J. Blige and I think we're coming to Toronto," LeToya said yesterday. "Hopefully, anyway. I'm pretty sure we are." LeToya is in Toronto this week for the first time since the late 1990s, when she still was a member of Destiny's Child. "It has been years and years since I've been here, but I remember MuchMusic, I remember Roots, I remember a lot about it," said LeToya, who currently is promoting her self-titled debut solo CD, which hits stores on July 18.

The 25-year-old Houston native made an appearance at MuchMusic yesterday and was scheduled to perform a brief set before a private audience at a club last night. She will co-host a radio show on The Flow 93.5 this morning. Following her messy breakup with Destiny's Child a half-decade ago, LeToya finally is following her own destiny with child-like excitement. She admitted it took her a while to build up enough confidence to embark upon a solo career.

"My part in Destiny's Child was the soprano, while LaTavia (Robertson) was the alto, B (Beyonce Knowles) sang lead and Kelly (Rowland) sang lead, too, so we all had our roles and we knew our roles," LeToya said. "For me to be in the studio singing soprano, alto, bass and have my own little thing going on, it was different, because I was so used to being in a group. The members of Destiny's Child first got together when we were 10. So being in a group had become very reassuring."

As for performing on her own, LeToya said, "Sometimes I'm looking to my left or to my right and I'm saying, 'Whoa, I see the dancers, but I'm looking for someone else with a mike here.' "But you know, I'm so excited. I'm just going to do the best I can, have fun and let people feel my music."

EX-DC MEMBER TURNS TO GOD, HOUSTON FOR NEW LP
May 9, 2006

Six years after she was ousted from the group, original Destiny's Child member LeToya Luckett is getting another chance in the spotlight — and she's not wasting time poking fun at her drama-filled exit.

"I think my full name is 'Ain't you the girl LeToya who used to be in Destiny's Child?' My nickname is 'Girl from Destiny's Child,' " said the singer, who's now going by just her first name.

After their March 2000 departure from Destiny's Child, LeToya and fellow ousted member LaTavia Roberson filed a breach-of-contract and defamation-of-character suit in 2002, shortly after the release of the song "Survivor." The former members said they were dissed in the song. The matter was settled out of court
Still, LeToya said she doesn't hold a grudge and still communicates with Beyoncé Knowles and her mother, Tina. (LeToya owns the Houston boutique Lady Elle and carries Tina Knowles' House of Dereon clothing line.)

"That was a part of me," LeToya said of her tenure in the group. "A wonderful experience. God chose for me to go in a separate direction. I don't question Him. They've been blessed, they've had an amazing career, and I can say I was a part of that. Now I'm doing my thing and I don't see the bad in [my leaving the group]. I'm so in a different place. People ask me, 'What kept you strong?' I didn't look at it in a negative light. I kept it moving. I have a very strong spiritual base. I stay in church, listening to the Word."

LeToya is scratching the surface with her new single, "Torn," which she hopes will prove that Beyoncé and Kelly Rowlands weren't the only ones who could sing in the original Destiny's Child.

"This album is basically talking about everything I've been through in the last six years: love, life and relationships," she said of her self-titled LP, due this summer. "I just want people to get to know me.

"['Torn'] is very personal," she added. "I know a lot of people can relate to it. It's a relationship record, about a person. Trying to decide whether they want to stay in a relationship or leave. They're obviously in love, caught up. This person has their heart, so they're kind of torn. 'Do I stay, ride it out, or do what's best for me and leave?' That's a hard decision to make. I've been through that before. I know several people who have been through that, torn in between staying and leaving."

For her album, LeToya called up half of Houston to collaborate. Bun B appears on "Tear Da Club Up," Paul Wall jumped on "All Eyes on Me," "Hey Fella" has a guest spot from Slim Thug, and "Gangsta Grillz" features Mike Jones and Killa Kyleon.

"I love Houston music to death," LeToya gushed. "Yes, I was one of the first, but at the same time, I'm happy to be a part of what they're doing. 'Tear Da Club Up,' it's definitely repping Houston. It's a grimy, hard track, with Bun B on it. I also love it because it has the [New Orleans] bounce I grew up on. With New Orleans being so close, they would bring that music back, and that's what we would bounce to. At 14, 15, they would have clubs for teenagers, and we would go in there and sweat your hair out. That's what we really grew up on.

" 'All Eyes on Me,' " she added, "it's talking about you getting ready for the club and all the guys are going to be looking at you. It's really a self-esteem record."

LETOYA SINGLE INFO & ALBUM TRACK LISTING!!!!
May 1, 2006

"Torn," the soulful first single from LeToya's self-titled solo debut, is a smash at radio, with all 65 Urban Mainstream stations putting the track in rotation in five short weeks, including KBXX (Houston), WVEE (Atlanta), KKBT (Los Angeles), WWPR (New York) and WGCI (Chicago). "Torn" is currently #11 on Billboard's R&B Monitor and has reached an audience of 23 million.

The most emotional and personal song on the album, "Torn" concerns a woman who finds herself at a critical juncture in a strained relationship. The accompanying video was directed by Chris Robinson, who makes his return to the video arena after taking a year's hiatus to direct "ATL," his feature film debut. Will LeToya stay with her man (played by Will Demps of the New York Giants) or leave? It's up to B.E.T.'s audience. "Torn" marks the first interactive video to ever air
on B.E.T.; viewers will have until May 5th to vote at BET.com.

VH1 Soul and MTV Jams have also added the video; it will be the "Soul Spotlight" featured video this week on VH1 Soul. Yahoo! Music recently
gave it its online premiere and LeToya has been selected as the next "The New Now" artist for Yahoo's "Who's Next." (Previous "New Now"
artists have included Mike Jones, James Blunt, Death Cab For Cutie and KT Tunstall.)

An original member of Destiny's Child, LeToya sang on and co-wrote the group's signature smash hits "Bills Bills Bills" and "Say My Name," which were from their 8-times Platinum album The Writing's On The Wall. Now she returns with LeToya, scheduled for release on July 18th.

"I just want to get my voice heard again and to allow people to know me outside of a group situation," says LeToya, who recently appeared on "CD
USA." "I also want young girls who look up to me to know not to give up, even when people try and take you away from your destiny."

LeToya is a dynamic, enticing mixture of songs and styles that reflects the many facets of its namesake, who penned all the tracks but one. On "Gangsta Grillz," an innovative screwed-R&B hybrid that features Mike Jones and Killa Kyleon, LeToya salutes her hometown of Houston, where she runs the successful clothing and accessory store Lady Elle. In the upbeat, Scott Storch-produced "I'm Good" she cuts loose a no-good man while "This Song," produced by Jermaine Dupri and written by Johnta Austin and Brian Michael Cox, finds her in the mood for love once more. And taking it back to the club, LeToya delivers two more uptempo
smashes, "Tear Da Club Up" with Bun B and Jazze Pha and "All Eyes On Me," which features Paul Wall.

The following is the track listing for LeToya as well as producer and guest credits:

LETOYA - JUST ME, MYSELF, AND I
May 1, 2006

We are starting May off big! Check out LeToya's lead feature in Allhophop.com's Alternatives Section!

It seems like only yesterday that four girls from Houston stepped onto the music scene and No, No, No’d their way right up the charts with Wyclef Jean. LeToya Luckett was one of those girls. She was in the group for seven years, but as fate would have it, the pop spotlight with Destiny’s Child was short-lived for LeToya. After the split, she was left to mature and learn all too quickly about life's lessons, friendships, and the often ugly side of the music business. Continue reading...

Also, don't forget to vote "Torn" on BET, and now BET and VH1 Soul!

*Shout out to Brian!*
